What is a PESTEL analysis?
PESTEL (sometimes PESTLE or PEST) is a framework for mapping the macro-environment around a company, industry, or project. Each letter covers a category of external force the subject cannot directly control but has to respond to.
Tips for a solid PESTEL
- Stay external. If a factor is internal to the company, it belongs in a SWOT, not a PESTEL.
- Be concrete. "Inflation" is weak. "US CPI at 3.2% YoY pressuring discretionary spending" is strong.
- Note the direction (opportunity vs threat) for each item. A PESTEL that's just a list of neutral facts is a missed analysis.
- 3–5 items per category is usually enough. 10 per category means you're padding.
Pair with related tools
Use PESTEL alongside other frameworks for deeper strategic analysis:
- SWOT analysis — assess internal strengths/weaknesses and external opportunities/threats.
- Porter's Five Forces — analyze competitive forces and industry structure.
